HOW TO HELP KIDS STOP THE SCREAMING, HITTING, CRYING & TANTRUMS INSTANTLY!!

One of the most difficult parts of raising children is knowing how to manage a child's temper tantrum! Here are some quick tips to help out the next time things start melting down.

1.) ACKNOWLEDGING THE EMOTION coupled with FIRM BOUNDARIES can help decrease tantrums/screaming almost instantaneously.

EXAMPLE #1
"I know you're angry right now because you want to play more and I said it was time to get ready. You really want to play more don't you?.....I know, I want to play more too but it's time to get ready now."

EXAMPLE #2
"I know you're upset right now and you don't want to go to bed. You don't want to go to bed do you?.....I know, I wouldn't want to either if I were you but it IS bedtime right now."

2.) You can end off with offering a choice such as 'do you want a hug or not' OR 'do you want the door open a little or a lot?' This can help kids feel that they still have some say in the matter.
3.) Always try to give a 1-5 minute warning before any transition to let kids know what will be happening next so it's not just sprung on them.

Most of the time kids just want to be heard and the present situation acknowledged. There are other factors that may be contributing to the frequency & intensity. Usually something is being missed. If you are still experiencing challenges in this area with your child, contact us to discuss further.
