"It's the JOURNEY, not the DESTINATION!" - travel advice for families from Parenting Expert specializing in behaviour

Travelling with children of any age can have limitations and barriers that can sometimes hinder our vacation experience and leave us feeling frustrated and disappointed from the outcome. It's important to remember a few key factors before jet-setting, sailing off or jumping onto that road trip.

7 KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE TRAVELLING WITH KIDS

1.) INTENTION - sounds obvious but you would be surprised at how many people don't do this step and things tend to spiral out of control in a undesirable way. Setting an intention helps anchor the purpose and can even lighten the stress-load for the upcoming trip or vacation with the family.

2.) RESEARCH - find out what places and events that align with you and your intentions. I like to also ask 'what will keep everyone as successful as possible?'. It may not be your absolute ideal dream getaway but it can certainly have elements that are rewarding.

3.) ACCEPTANCE - sometimes our imaginations run wild and we can get stuck in a trap of wanting the 'perfect' trip however, when it comes to travelling as a family, many barriers can get in the way such as children's ages, rollercoaster of feelings/emotions, fatigue, hunger, illnesses, closures, detours and even cancellations. Learning to accept things JUST AS THEY ARE can be challenging but very necessary to curb any disappointments or frustrations of the holiday.

4.) PLAN - design a check list of everything you want. Then re-visit the list and highlight the things that are more realistic and likely to happen. Include everyone's needs and agenda as best as possible. Make sure you feel secure with this step and that it resonates with you in a positive manner.

5.) DISCUSS - have a meeting with the kids to go over all the details of the plan. Adapt language and length of discussion according to your child's age or abilities.

6.) TAKE IT EASY - remember to take your time, take moments to breathe and schedule time to just sit and do nothing. These restorative practices can really help make for a more quality experience and help you feel more grounded.

7.) ENJOY - even the smallest moments. Any time spent together as a family is a good thing to help bond and connect deeper and remember it's the journey, not the destination!
