How Parents can discuss terrorism, shootings and bombings with Kids in a positive and helpful way

Is it okay for kids to watch the news and hear about the negative stuff going on in the world?

In times of tragedy, like bombings, shootings, terrorism, murders or accidents, it is challenging to stay positive. We can be easily be inundated by intense fear, deep sadness and confusion. It can easily end up taking a negative spiral that effects everyone. Adults, children, families and communities all over the world may be left with an overwhelming feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. I take comfort each and every time in these difficult situations when I think of the words of the graceful and humble Mr. Rogers…..I always look for the ‘helpers’.

It’s important to discuss these negative situations with children in age-appropriate ways so that they can build the skills at an early age on how to learn to cope with stressful and difficult situations. Focus on what kids can do or can't do, what's okay and not okay. Most children are naturally good at ‘helping’ others and using Mr. Rogers’ example is one that kids can really resonate with.

Watch the 1 minute video on his inspiring message to the world. Share it with the kids……
