When coping with 'self-isolation' with kids at home, there can be many challenges that arise that may have never have been there before! Our regular routines and schedules are disrupted and even our favorite past-times are banned as well. One of the greatest challenges when it comes to our children, is telling them they can't go play with their friends and they can't go to any playgrounds. This is a difficult concept to understand for most adults and children are really needing guidance around what they CAN DO and what the CAN'T DO any more.

Julie Romanowski joins in with other experts to provide some creative ideas and insight on this topic of SELF ISOLATION in this latest Global National News article written by Arti Patel.

ZAP the Greed Out of Christmas-time for Kids

12/5/2019

There is a high demand that society puts on children (even at a very young age) to say ‘PLEASE & THANK YOU’ when someone gives them something. Even though we want our children to be polite, by reminding a child to constantly say the 'magical words' does not guarantee that the child is truly thankful or even cares. It isn't hopeless though, there is another way around this and it's done through teaching children about GRATITUDE!

To help teach the concept of gratitude and help kids build their skills in being grateful, we must discuss the expectations and details about it but also demonstrate this ourselves. When we create an environment of gratefulness that children are exposed to on a regular basis, they are better able to create the habit in a positive way.

3 TIPS TO ENSURE MORE GRATITUDE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
  1. Instead of writing Christmas lists of what they want before Christmas, have them write lists of all the things they already have that they are thankful for.
  2. Encourage children to make 'thank you' cards ahead of time to bring during parties or events where gifts may be exchanged to help prompt them into the feeling of gratefulness and express that in their own way.
  3. Help children with ideas around 'giving' things this Christmas that involves making things for family and friends. There is more value that goes into something made versus buying toys and candy.
give the gift of gratitude to your kids this Christmas season, local parenting expert shares 3 tips for parents on how to enhance more please and thank you's to adults who give them gifts by encouraging gratefulness in life and thankfulness, decrease stress in parents and children by communicating clear expectations and building skills on how to actually be thankful instead of being forced to say thank you.

4 GIFT GIVING IDEAS that are sure to 'ease' the holidays & 'please' the  families, staff, teams and groups

11/12/2019

Yes! It's that time of year where peace, joy and harmony are meant to be felt however, GIFT-GIVING can really put a damper on feeling good holiday season. It doesn't take much to feel defeated when fighting traffic and lineups or blowing money and wasting time on crap no one is grateful for. It's seems to be enough to just burn right through all the goodness the holiday's are supposed to be about.

We've provided 4 MAJOR GIFT-GIVING IDEAS that can really preserve the positive holiday spirit and make it a time of year you actually look forward to and enjoy rather than curse or get stressed about. Experience gifts are becoming popular as people are realizing the impact of 'too much stuff' as well as the waste that comes from wrapping paper and plastic packaging but that's not all that's gaining traction, these ideas we've come up with below are sure to please even the worst hum-bugs this Christmas season!

#1.) SHARE A GIFT
  • Sharing a gift as a 'family, group, staff or team' can help alleviate waste, time and energy by creating an 'experience' that everyone can learn or enjoy such as an ice-skating event, movie, holiday outing or winter activity.
  • Organizing group experiences also holds the opportunity for bonding time and team building that makes for a more positive outcome overall.

#2.) MAKE A GIFT
  • There are plenty of baked goods and crafts ideas you can actually make OR find 'home-made gifts' that can be found at schools, churches and recreation centers through out the month of December.
  • Finding creative ways to 'help someone' in terms of a gift is ideal such as offers, coupons or tickets for helpful activities/chores.

#3.) BUY SECOND-HAND GIFTS
  • Shop at your local thrift store or garage sale in the months prior to the Christmas season. There are many items that are desirable and affordable that are perfect for the holiday season OR through out the year.
  • Games that include bringing something in your household you no longer want and turn it into a fun game of chance by wrapping it and having members choose their 'own' gift.

#4.) SPREAD THE GIFT-GIVING
  • Try using the 'Secret Santa' approach so everyone receives a special gift instead of a bunch of random gifts that may not have as much meaning.
  • There are also certain guidelines that can be agreed upon such as 'gifts under $10 only' or buy gifts for the 'kids only' and not for the adults.

We all have the power to make informed, quality and positive choices that not only impact ourselves but our family, friends and community. Let the GIFT-GIVING be more about giving than the hidden obligation of providing a gift.

Happy Holidays!

When does youth violence actually happen? When should parents start looking for warnings signs or behaviours? Julie Romanowski has been invited to speak on the radio with John Daly from CKNW 980 about this issue that has many parents in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley concerned about in hoping their children don't go down the path of crime as they get older. With so much crime and gang-violence happening in British Columbia and through out North America, it is critical for Parents, Teachers and caregivers to know how to PREVENT these negative behaviours.

How parents can prevent kids from getting into a life of crime - Julie Romanowski on the John Daly Show CKNW 980

9/21/2019

No one can predict if their child is going to go down the path of crime and gangs however, it does happen. This is not an issue anymore for people in poverty or low economic or social status. It is happening everywhere and to anyone. Julie Romanowski discusses this very intense topic on the John Daly show (CKNW 980 News Talk Radio) about some warning signs parents should be aware of as well as tips on how to prevent violent behaviour in young children.

5 TIPS to help Parents prevent violent behaviour:

1.) Work on CONNECTION - create opportunities to be more in-sync with your child on a daily basis and in challenging times. Let them know you are there to support, love and guide them by verbalizing it, using your body language and presence.
2.) Exercise LEADERSHIP - as a parent, it's your role to guide, teach and lead children through life. By using respect and validation with a child in challenging times, this can help children understand you want to  work through the problems together.
3.) Clear EXPECTATIONS - teach children what is expected of them in all routines and times of day. Create boundaries around behaviour, reactions and problem solving for a more positive outcome.
4.) CORRECT the behaviour - this seems so obvious but rarely happens. We assume kids know the parts of their behaviour that were right and wrong but by clarifying this for them in a calm and respectful manner, they will be able to fully understand and work with in those boundaries.
5.) VALIDATE their existence - does your face light up when you see your child? let them know they are heard, valued and good contributors to the family, community and in life. Give them a sense of belonging to the greater good.
